My one year stay in Sri Lanka has been most interesting. It is a land where the sun shines all twelve months of the year in spite of seasonal changes.
here are two seasons-the dry and the wet.If you live through these seasons you will learn many things about the way of life here.Unlike in our country the seasons here vary from one part of the country to another. From January to April the climate in the hills is generally warm and sunny.During this season people of all faiths climb the sacred mountain,Sri Pada singing songs of devotion in chorus.Buddhists believe that the sacred foot print of the Buddha is here. Christians.Christians believe it to be the footprint of Adam.Hindus believe it to e God Shiva's.But I know that the Buddhists belief the right one.The sunrise from the top of this mountain is a scene that one can never forget.
When te rain begins in te hills towards May dark clouds appear, lighting flashes and thunder breaks the silence of the hills.winding streams swell as they flow on their way to feed the four major rivers, the Mahaweli, the Kelani, the Kalu and the Walawe.

In the dry-zone low lands,as in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa farmers depend on the monsoon rains for farming during the rainy season. In the dry season depend on water from rivers and tanks. In those low lands,August and September are generally dry months. The fear of drought is always present in their minds. In the wet zone low lands,February and March are rather dry.Farmers reap the harvest and fill their barns during these months.I was once invited to the house of a farmer family where I saw an interesting ritual. The members of the family, together with their relatives prepared the first meal from their harvest which they offered as alms at the Buddhist Temple.
Sri Lanka is a country for bird watching. The swallows from the Himalays, the golden oriole and other birds from elsewhere migrate here in search of sunshine. The cuckoo bird announces the dawn of the New Year which generally falls on 14th April every year. There is so much to see in this small and beautiful country. It is not famous just for its tea. Here you meet people with smiling faces from all walks of like.A visit to this country any time of the year woukld be a rewarding experience.
